Our self-catering farm BiJo La Palma

I have been living on our small self-catering finca in the southwest of the Canary Island of La Palma since April 2020. Even in Germany, I have been fully self-sufficient with fruit and vegetables from my garden for more than 10 years and have been able to apply a lot of my knowledge here too. But of course the conditions on La Palma are completely different, especially in the southwest, the newer part of the island. The soil is very stony and poor, it rains very little, the solar radiation is extreme, there are strong downdraughts from the Cumbre Vieja, which are extremely dry and hot at Calima. There are also many pests and, due to the often humid nights, a very high incidence of mildew, which attacks the leaves of the plants that are often damaged by the strong sunlight. After initial moments of frustration, I have now learned to deal with this and am continuing to learn. I had to say goodbye to some vegetables and fruit varieties, but I have gained others.

If you would like to know more, you are welcome to visit my website https://www.finca-bijo.com/. There you will also find my vacation apartment in Tazacorte, my photo products (still in the development phase) and my gallery at Artflakes. I also report on youtube under “Gärtnerin aus Leidenschaft“, not only about my experiences in terms of self-sufficiency, but also about the island, especially the reconstruction after the eruption in 2021. My quick and healthy recipes from self-sufficiency can also be found there and I would like to post them here, accompanied by a video or short.

I look forward to making new suggestions and acquaintances on this platform 😊
